Camera work/framing: Long shot, behind shot.
Notes: Walking away through long grass, guitar on back.

1) Camera work/framing: Mid shot, close up, extreme close up.
1) Notes: Cross legged in the grass playing the guitar.
2) Camera work/framing: close up, extreme close up, slow motion.
2) Notes: Dandelion blowing away in the wind.

Camera work/framing: Long shot, zooming in slowly.
Notes: Playing guitar on a rock by the lake.

1) Camera work/framing: Extreme close up.
1) Notes: Holding a photo of the couple in a frame, taking the photo out of the frame.
2) Camera work/framing: Extreme close up, fading from home to Hainault.
2) Notes: Ripping up the photo.

Camera work/framing: Mid shot, close up.
Notes: Throwing the ripped up photo into the lake, close up of the pieces hitting the water.

Emil Nava case study

Emil Nava
Emil Nava began his career as a runner for a film production company and went on to graduate and become an assistant director for Blink Productions where he managed video shoots.

He then signed to Academy, one of, if not the biggest music video production company in the world. After moving on from this employer, he worked for Between The Eyes and now works mainly for Pulse as well as freelancing for OB Management.

When Emil first started making music videos for independent labels, the budget would be between £5,000 and £10,000. However, his first budget for one of the bigger companies was for the band Kid British with the song 'Our House'. The budget was £20,000 and included filming in Manchester using local people for 1 day, 2 to 3 days editing and 10 days for pre-production planning. This shows just how fast-paced the music video business is.

Emil has made some of the best known modern music videos to date for number 1 artists including Rita Ora, Paloma Faith, Ed Sheeran and Jessie J. Jessie J's video for 'Price Tag' had a budget of £160,000 - Nava's most expensive video ever to produce.

Jamie Thraves Case Study

Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves got his name on to the scene of directing because of his award winning short films he made at university. He used his short films as a 'calling card' to get a 'foot in the door' with the video production company factory films.

Jamie Thraves began making early short experimental films in 1989 at Hull University, having previously studied illustration . His graduation film Scratch(1991) and The Take-Out (1993) (made under the BFI New Directors scheme) both went on to win numerous awards at short film festivals worldwide. He joined the Royal College Of Art in 1993 where he made another award winning film, The Hackney Downs (1994). After leaving the RCA he joined Oil Factory, a music video company, making his breakthrough video for Radiohead for their song "Just" where a man lies on the pavement and is confronted by an angry crowd, this video garnered Thraves a lot of attention for its strong narrative structure and use of subtitles, what the man says to make the crowd lie down at the end of the video still manages to cause great discussion amongst fans some fifteen years later. Thraves made one more short film I Just Want To Kiss You (1997), starring Martin Freeman which won the Fox Searchlight Award for Best Short Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 1998.

Initial Research for our Artist

Sarah Bird

In just three years, Sarah Bird has established herself as one of the best vocal talents on the music scene in Leicester.

Her accomplishments within band Sugabeat include two appearances at Glastonbudget, a weekly stint at Entropy and weekly slots hosting open mic nights at The Exchange Bar and Bruxelles Cafe; not including the countless gigs booked at O Bar, The Looking Glass and The Shed.  De Montfort University's newspaper The Demon, described Sugabeat as "a band not to be undermined [with] a strong on stage presence [which] loaded the air with a lively dose of pop with lead singer's effortless voice piercing the atmosphere. To say that her voice is incredible would be an understatement."

Now, Sarah is embarking on a new direction, focusing on her ability as a talented songwriter. With her beautiful voice and soulful pop and blues inspired tunes, it is with no doubt that Sarah is already fulfilling a reputation as an exciting and exceptional new solo artist.

This is the homepage picture on her website.

Filming of our Preliminary

These are stills from our one and only day of filming for our preliminary. It took us roughly 3 hours to do as we had to film various shots all in a continuous shot singing the song the whole way through. I will be uploading the finished product soon.

This is Katie and Me looking back on all our footage

This is Me and Charlie looking back at some more of our final footage

We used the white boards during filming so that we could look at the lyrics to the song whilst we were being filmed.

Copyright

Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms. who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights. It is a form of intellectual property (like the patent, the trademark and the trade secret) applicable to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete.

Lyrics

This is the lyrics to the song we have chosen

Make It Out Alive
Words and music by Sarah Bird ©2012
I’m sat at home alone, feeling sad and blue
Won’t you come on home, babys missing you
It’s hard to believe but you’ve really got a hold on me
And baby, lady won’t leave with the sugar you’re giving me
Chorus
Tried to forget you
But my mind wouldn’t let you disappear
Tried to leave you
But my heart wants to feel you
And I’ve lost all my pride
And I don’t think I’ll make it out alive
Papa don’t like you but what’s a girl to do
I’d rather be near you than stay home and be blue
Chorus
I’m not dead, but I never make it out alive

Permission from our Unsigned Artist

Music Video Success Criteria

There are many ways that you can tell if a music video is successful or not, such as. If the video has won any awards such as a VMA. Another way you could tell is if the video gets a lot of hits on YouTube. Also you could see from when the video was released if the sales of the song has increased whether that be through downloads or the purchase of CD's. Another reason is if the video is talked about a lot through magazines, newspapers or online. You can also tell through how many times the video is shown on television and how much publicity the video gets whether that be positive or negative.

There have been many successful music videos over the years but one music video i would class as a successful video is from the song 'Gangnam Style by PSY' this song is by a Korean artist called PSY the song has had over 500 million! views on YouTube since its release in July 2012. This may be to do with the cheesy dance moves that have been used during the video. The song has also reached number one in the charts in the UK and many other countries.

Preliminary Task

Our preliminary task this year is lip syncing to the song 'Don't go Breaking my Heart' by Elton John and KiKi Dee. We are doing this as practice for our actual 'Music Promo Video'. Me and my the rest of my group Katie Edmead and Charlie Searle have now finished filming our preliminary and are now in the process of editing it.

Purpose of a Music Promo Video

The purpose of a music promo video is to promote the Artist or Band. This could persuade the audience to maybe buy a CD of the Artist or Band or download there songs. It also promotes the Artist or Bands albums or singles to the audiences and fans. the Artist or Band will also make a music promo video to make an artistic statement.

My Favorite Music Video

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen was written by Freddie Mercury in 1975 for Queens new album A Night at the Opera. This song was great success in the UK after its release in October 1975 it had sold over one million copies by the end of January 1976. The song was number one in the charts for 9 weeks in a row then again reached number one in 1991 after Freddie Mercury's death for a further 5 weeks. The main reason why this video was created was because they were at number one for so long  they had to keep coming back to Top of the Pops to sing it, so they created the video so they didn't have to keep coming back. All of Queens songs were originally written by Brian May in a studio but this song was entirely Freddie Mercury's idea and was left entirely to him to write and create it. This song now has the title of the 'best selling single of all time'.

The reason why this song is my favorite music video is because of the creativity inside of it and them filming some of it through a prism so it looks like there is more than the four members of Queen.

Lyrics to our Preliminary

Dont Go Breaking my Heart- Elton John, KiKi Dee
Don't go breaking my heart
I couldn't if I tried
Honey if I get restless
Baby you're not that kind
Don't go breaking my heart
You take the weight off me
Honey when you knocked on my door
I gave you my key
Nobody knows it
When I was down
I was your clown
Nobody knows it
Right from the start
I gave you my heart
I gave you my heart
So don't go breaking my heart
I won't go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart
And nobody told us
'Cause nobody showed us
And now it's up to us babe
I think we can make it
So don't misunderstand me
You put the light in my life
You put the sparks to the flame
I've got your heart in my sights
