Evaluation question 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

When we were constructing, researching and planning and evaluating our music video. We used all these types of media technology; Imacs, Final Cut Express, Blogger, YouTube, Google, HD camera, Monopod and a Tripod.

This is a screen grab from the program Final Cut Express that we use to edit our video footage. When using this we are able to get rid of parts of our filming that weren't needed and were able to move parts of our video around. By using this it meant we did not need to film it in the order it was going to be shown in the final video. We uploaded the filmed footage from the HD camera that we used onto Final Cut Express so that it could be edited easily. This was to make sure that that our video was so that it looked professional, we also used a Tripod and a Monopod. All the editing that was done was carried out on the schools Imac computers.

We mainly used Google to conduct our research on our artist and the song we was using. The group also used websites such as Facebook and Twitter show our video so it gathered a wider interest so that we could receive audience feedback.

The last website that we used in our final process to get our video out there was to upload it to YouTube so our video would spread across the internet. YouTube is the most popular way to show videos any where on the internet. This will hopefully give our video to a wider audience and to get it more interest and hopefully give the artist of the song some credit as well.

Using these forms of media technologies has made our video a success.

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We asked our fellow peers and teachers views on how we could improve on our music video, advert and digipak before we finished them. We got a lot of positive feedback on our work and a lot of new ideas.

In our video we originally had a lot of long shots and not as much editing as the video was for quite a slow song. But after getting some advice from our teacher we was told that there had to be faster editing, more close ups and a wider range of transitions and cuts.

After we used our teachers comments, we made the useful changes. Then we put our video up on YouTube so that our peers could watch it and give us some feedback. Once we had made the changes to our video the viewers of it said that they enjoyed it a lot more.

After we finished our video, we had to make a digipak, this is what our first prototype looked like:

After we consulted with our viewers, my group decided to make some changes in order to make it more appealing. For example our original digipak was going to be black and white with a hint of colour. Me and my group decided that the lips and the writing were to be red to make them stand out from the background of the digipak. Also my group made the Katie's face the main focus point on the front cover. On the inside cover of the digipak we used another photo of the forest so that the digipak was just simple. This was a well thought out decision by me and my group because the finished product came out exceptionally well.

Me and my group were influenced by our peers that our advert should be the same as our digipak. This was a good call on our behalf as it went along side with our digipak. We also put logos from HMV and iTunes and also put ratings from well known companies such as The Times and MTV.

This is a collection of ideas that we collected from our audience feedback so that we could improve on our work.

Evaluation Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts (Digipak, Magazine Advertisement)?

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product, use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Before our group started to create our media project, we watched loads of different music videos, we watched videos from the Channel 4's top 100 music videos. This gave us a lot of inspiration and ideas for us to use in our own video.

When we were looking at conventions of a music video there are lots of different reasons you can look at such as Camera shots, Lighting and Editing, Costume and Props and how our final project is shown to the audience.

Lighting and Editing

For me and my group the editing was the most difficult part of our music video because every thing had to be perfectly synced. This is because we had 7 different shots to use and all of them had to be put along side the song so that Katie looked like she was singing the song. Between the transitions of the scenes it has to go along with the music if there is fast editing it must go with a fast paced song. As our song was quite slow paced we had to use different fades and transitions instead of straight cuts that would be used in a fast paced song.
The lighting that we was using was all natural light because most of the filming was done outside or in a well natural light room. But we had no budget to use for lighting or props so we improvised with different things and of the filming was done on public land or in our private property.

However, most ideas that we used was previous of what we have seen somewhere as we wanted to follow what shots or scenes that had made it into the top 100, whereby we followed the conventions and adapted them to ourselves to develop and improve on them.

Camera Shots

Me and my group planned all the different shots and scenes we were going to use and then went off to film them. We then had to upload the footage to the Imacs and started to edit it, our teacher gave us some constructive criticism to help make our video better because we had too many mid shots and long shots so our teacher asked us to go and film some extreme close up so you could see the emotion of the singer in our song. We then went away and filmed Katie singing in front of a plain white wall, with just her face in shot and this helped us add real emotion to our video.
Costumes and Props
In our music video, we used quite a few props, but the costume side was a different story. As we wanted the music video to be as if it was just her and her life, we let her choose what she wanted to wear, nothing fancy just normal clothes. The different props that were used consisted of was a guitar, which proved to be tricky to use or imitate if you have no idea how to use it, and to be able to play it in time with the song, therefore we spent about an hour or so learning to strum the guitar in beat with the music making it look realistic. We did also have a mic, however the footage we captured with that we thought that it didn't look all that good, so we didn't end up using it. Another prop was this picture of Katie and Me, which was an important prop, and was an influential part of the song. Another prop that we used was called the monopod, similar in ways to a steady cam but far less complicated and at a fraction of the price.
